Linear Algebra Example Problems – Coordinate System Representation Example #1

health No Comments »

http://adampanagos.org

Course website: https://www.adampanagos.org/ala

When working with vectors we often implicitly use the standard basis. For example, the vector x = [2; -3] tells us the coordinates with respect to the standard basis {[1; 0], [0; 1]}.

At other times it is desirable to work with different coordinate systems that are represented by a different basis. We denote the vector x with respect to the basis B as [x]B.

In this problem we’re provided a basis B and the [x]B. We then compute the vector x, the coordinates of [x]B with respect to the standard basis.

Carl Shulman (Pt 2) – AI Takeover, Bio & Cyber Attacks, Detecting Deception, & Humanity's Far Future

health No Comments »

The second half of my 7 hour conversation with Carl Shulman is out!

My favorite part! And the one that had the biggest impact on my worldview.

Here, Carl lays out how an AI takeover might happen:

– AI can threaten mutually assured destruction from bioweapons,
– use cyber attacks to take over physical infrastructure,
– build mechanical armies,
– spread seed AIs we can never exterminate,
– offer tech and other advantages to collaborating countries, etc

Plus we talk about a whole bunch of weird and interesting topics which Carl has thought about:

– what is the far future best case scenario for humanity
– what it would look like to have AI make thousands of years of intellectual progress in a month
– how do we detect deception in superhuman models
– does space warfare favor defense or offense
– is a Malthusian state inevitable in the long run
– why markets haven’t priced in explosive economic growth
– & much more

Carl also explains how he developed such a rigorous, thoughtful, and interdisciplinary model of the biggest problems in the world.

WHAT IS BRAIN EDUCATION TV?
Brain Education TV provides mental health and mental wellness videos to help young adults with loneliness, depression, and anxiety. The foundation of our content comes from Brain Education, an academic study from South Korea that stems from over 40 years of research and application and has been practiced by millions around the world.

WHY WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH…
We suffered from high-functioning loneliness and depression our whole lives. We lived different lives in different states, but when we met, we realized we were struggling with common issues that reflected an important problem in our young adult generation. We didn’t know who we were, what we were passionate about, what we should live for, and what direction our lives were “supposed” to go. We spent a lot of time wandering in search of that magical ‘answer’ that will solve all problems (like I’m sure most of you are doing right now), and yet the further we searched outside, the more pronounced the emptiness inside of us felt.

Millions of people suffer silently from mental health related issues. Yet our society still places taboos around openly talking about relevant mental health topics like loneliness, depression, and anxiety. As a result, our young adults don’t know how to talk about it constructively, where to turn to, or what resources they have to combat this real-life threat to their wellbeing.

We credit Brain Education for giving us the courage to overcome our own mental health struggles and create the lives we want…and now we hope you can too through the videos we share on this channel.
